Cadence vs torque sensors?Updated 2 years ago

If you're interested in getting an electric bike, and have done some research, you've likely seen that all ebikes either use a cadence or a torque sensor

What's the difference between cadence and torque sensors?

Cadence sensors measure and determine the pedal assist output by the rotation of the crank. There is a ring of magnets that trigger a response when each passes over the sensor which communicates to the motor which adjusts its assist accordingly. It can take about 2 rotations before the pedal assist kicks in which can lead to sudden, but consistent, acceleration.

Torque sensors measure and determine pedal assist output by gauging the force applied when pedaling. The harder you pedal, the faster you go. If you want to crawl along at a gentle pace, pedal lightly! This leads to a much more natural and adaptive experience and builds confidence when starting from standstill.
